The Other Side of Philanthropy

Posted in Debut CD with tags , , , , , on January 9, 2012 by Jennie Walker

Anyone who knows me, knows I have earned my living working in the charity sector, as staff for several major international non-profits and as a fundraising consultant, with my ongoing musical pursuits on the side.

During the winners trip to London for the British Airways Face to Face program, I met journalist Michele Mitchell, whose Film At Eleven company had also won a place in the winners group. When she learned of my fundraising background she approached me about getting involved with the fundraising efforts behind her documentary film, “Haiti: Where Did The Money Go?” which shines a spotlight on how aid works during disasters. I jumped at the chance to use my talents on such an interesting film project and to work with an even more interesting person.

On January 10, 2012, the results of my fundraising efforts will be seen as “Haiti: Where Does The Money Go” makes its debut on PBS and begins a rollout to markets around the United States over several months. It also represents my role as Line Producer on the film. I was presented with a rare opportunity to work on aspects of the film beyond fundraising, and it has been one of the greatest learning experiences of my life.

At 11:11 PM on 11/11/11 An Amazing Google Alert Came Through!

Posted in Debut CD with tags , , , , , , , , , , on November 12, 2011 by Jennie Walker

At exactly 11:11 p.m. on 11/11/11 I received a Google Alert that my music business had been featured on the British Airways website. Link HERE

I’m not sure how much I believe in the vortex that is supposed to have opened up in the universe for all good things to start happening, but I sure want to believe! I kept feeling that something special would happen with my music on 11/11/11. I felt with all the things in the works, something would settle in or some official word would come through. Never in my mind did I think that I would hear about something I applied for almost a year ago, when I was in the middle of the British Airways Face of Opportunity Contest. I’d forgotten all about that I had even applied to be a featured business. And, I never expected I would hear about it at 11:11 p.m.

I take this as a sign from the Universe that something BIG is about to happen with my music. I have been working at this consistently for a long long time and with more focus than I thought possible the last 12 months. I am on the verge of being heard..literally. And, that’s the most important part of this journey…being heard.

And speaking of being heard, I will be performing in New York City at the National Underground (Upstairs) on December 17, 2011 with David Patterson on acoustic guitar. My one hour show starts at 9:00 p.m. and it’s FREE! Hope to see you there.

Quoted in Hypebot on Twitter Hash Tag Usage ###

Posted in Debut CD with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , on October 19, 2011 by Jennie Walker

I don’t know how I missed this one, but I was quoted in a Hypebot article on my use of Twitter Hash Tags back in September! Link to article HERE. What did I recommend for Hash Tags? Music Monday #MM – was my favorite! I can’t stress enough how effective Twitter has been for me and my music. Not only have I met people on Twitter, I late got to know off line, it is through a person on Twitter whom I met, that I learned about the British Airways contest, which I ultimately won! And, most recently, I was offered a publishing/licensing deal to pitch my song “Night Flight to London” for film/TV placement. All from Twitter. That is just two of many cool outcomes from that source……….

Steve Jobs Vision Makes My Music Possible

Posted in Debut CD with tags , , , , , , , , on October 6, 2011 by Jennie Walker

With all the Captains of Industry who have made their mark in the world, I have just realized I was witness to history by living in the time of Steve Jobs and Apple.

As I type my blog on my Apple MacBook Pro, see my iPhone laying on the table nearby, and think about my debut album Night Flight to London, which is selling in iTunes, I realize just how far and wide the impact of one man truly can be.

Steve Jobs provided a platform for music and now, my music, which is unprecedented. It has changed not only the course of the music industry, but the course of individuals who dream of selling their music around the world.

The Google tribute said it best. A simple line under the search bar:

Steve Jobs, 1955 – 2011

Steve was known for his simplicity. He was known for his vision. He was a bit of an outsider. But he was able to get enough fans to eventually prove his vision correct. We should all see the world through those black round glasses…just like Harry Potter, it must be an amazing view.

So, I dedicate today my song It’s Our Time, for all those dreamers who have made history in the pursuit of their dreams.

IT’S OUR TIME

I’ve been through, more than you know
And I’ve held tight to my dreams all along
And this time, it’s my night
And I’m glowing from the victory with you by my side

I’ve walked tall, as others made light
I was still serious, with what I knew was right
It’s our life, it’s our time
For our dreams to rule and our spirits to fly

Come with me and we’ll make history
Claim your spot it’s our victory
Now I’ve found my own voice, and I speak from the heart

It’s our time. It’s our time. It’s our time.

Now it’s time, to take flight
To put to good use all those lessons of life
Over time, you will see
Changes when you put your faith in me

Come with me and we’ll make history
Claim your spot it’s our victory
Now I’ve found my own voice, and I speak from the heart

It’s our time. It’s our time. It’s our time.

Let it show that dreams can come true
Nothing can stop us, a change is due
This is worth fighting for
Give it every thing and more

Come with me and we’ll make history
Claim your spot it’s our victory
Now I’ve found my own voice, and I speak from the heart

It’s our time. It’s our time. It’s our time.

Come with me and we’ll make history
Claim your spot it’s our victory
Now I’ve found my own voice, and I speak from the heart

It’s our time. It’s our time. It’s our time.

Now I’ve found my own voice, and I speak from the heart

It’s our time. It’s our time. It’s our time.

OCTOBER 3, 2011 – A VERY BIG DAY FOR ME AND MY MUSIC!

Posted in Debut CD with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on October 3, 2011 by Jennie Walker

A life time in the making, today my debut album “Night Flight to London” hits over 200 global music distribution sites around the world. Thanks to Ditto Music, my digital music distributor, my music is reaching far and wide.

I have mixed emotions today. I am very excited to finally get my debut album out onto the marketplace, after many years of twists and turns behind the scenes. I have not talked publicly about everything that was going on, but it’s fair to say it was a huge disappointment to realize my UK record deal was a non-starter and that I would have to put this out all on my own. I had always been in control of my music career and had every intention of putting it out on my own, so when the label came calling, I was a bit shocked, but then I thought..hey, this could be a good thing. Huge promises were made; Conference Calls took place; Contracts were reviewed and signed; Control was given away and then with all the promise in the world, the relationship with the UK label got on its natural course. In the end, nothing was happening, delay after delay on the album release, standards in representation of me and my music were not up to par, design elements below my own standards and eventually a lot of promises on which absolutely nothing had been delivered. And, when I say nothing, I really mean less than ZERO.

I felt something was off right away with my label deal. And, I kept praying I was wrong. But I am very intuitive and I just did not want to believe what all the signs were telling me. After all, I had gone public with the UK label deal, made it a big to do, and actually thought they could bring something to the table I could not. This would not be the case. I would be that artist I swore I would never be, the one who would be too excited by the thought of a label deal to walk away. Having now experience this first hand, I can see just how hard that decision actually is. I saw it as a validation of my music. Something I desperately needed after a life time pursuit. Besides, some members of my own family felt I was crying wolf each time I told them about something I felt was significant, like this label deal. But, realists are bottom line people. Show me the money. Show me the results of your decades of efforts. Show me everything you gave up in your life was worth it..what do you have to show for it? But what they were really saying was this..”We hope you make it in this impossible field where everything thing is against you. We really truly do hope we are wrong. But since it’s been a lifetime, maybe you should just cut your losses and get a real job.”

While the British Airways contest was taking place, I was stupefied when my label did nothing to help promote it. Not even a tweet! This was a very bad sign. I realized I was on my own with this contest early on and made the decision I was going to win regardless of what the label was going to do. When I won the contest and was ready to plan my February 2011 trip to London and set an album release party, as was the plan and was the winning pitch in the contest, I could not get my calls or emails returned in a timely fashion from the label. As I was running out of time on the clock to book my ticket and also the second ticket anywhere in the world British Airways flies to promote my music, I could not get a call back to help me decided where I should go. There was no interaction to take this win and make something of it…promote it as a way to differentiate me. This was the moment we had been waiting for. Industry experts at Universal Music Group (through which my album was to be distributed in the UK), I had been told, did not think I had enough traciton to make it. Representatives told my label I was not well known enough, my fan base was not big enough. My label decided to present to them a list of every piece of news that had ever been written about me, any awards, any exposure on radio or TV. In the end, it was not enough, I was told. Universal had considered and not taken artists who had been exposed on national TV through major talent competitions, most more well known than me. And, there was a “problem” with my music I heard time and time again. One radio promoter said they did not feel they could get it played on the right stations or at all. Now, I have to tell you, this did not sound “right” to me. I mean, you are paying a promoter to get it on the Radio, their job is not to decline the work. Their job it to try to fulfill that work. But, what did I know? I was not speaking to any of these people directly and hearing it all second hand through my label. So I took it at face value.

In the end, the label had no money to spend on me. And, quite frankly that is one of the attracive things about signing with a label – financial resoucces – in theory, they have money to spend on promotion that you don’t have. What I have come to realize is that all the aspects of running a label can be outsourced. You can do it all on you own, you just need the budet or a majot work aorund to get what you need.

There was a point during the British Airways contest I was wishing I was all on my own. Wishing that I had my control back. I could not believe this UK label was doing so little and that I had signed away my control. I was embarrassed. So, toward the end, during a conference call with my label where I was told, once again, there were “problems” with my music, I jumped at the chance to get out. And they did not argue with me. They admitted they did not have the budget to spend on me. They felt bad. They apologized. But, I was happy to be finally shutting the door on an 18 month waste of time and energy. I had essentially made the decision to leave, long before I actually did.

So, now, here I am, Monday, October 3, 2011 and this day is so full of promise. I have my album out on the marketplace through my own label, Jennie Girl™ Music, and I am back in control and in the middle of major work arounds to get what I need with a tiny budget. It feels good. It feels right, It feels so much better. It feels like the way it is supposed to be.

The moral of the story? My mother use to say “Never let anyone do for you what you can do for yourself.” And, in the internet age for DIY artists, it’s never been more true than it is today.

So, come join me as I make my own personal history with my music. Buy the album for $9.99 or a single for $0.99 – it all helps!

Just like the lyrics in my song say It’s Our Time.

IT’S OUR TIME

I’ve been through, more than you know
And I’ve held tight to my dreams all along
And this time, it’s my night
And I’m glowing from the victory with you by my side

I’ve walked tall, as others made light

It’s our life, it’s our time
For our dreams to rule and our spirits to fly

Come with me and we’ll make history
Claim your spot it’s our victory
Now I’ve found my own voice, and I speak from the heart

It’s our time. It’s our time. It’s our time.

Now it’s time, to take flight
To put to good use all those lessons of life
Over time, you will see
Changes when you put your faith in me

Come with me and we’ll make history
Claim your spot it’s our victory
Now I’ve found my own voice, and I speak from the heart

It’s our time. It’s our time. It’s our time.

Let it show that dreams can come true
Nothing can stop us, a change is due
This is worth fighting for

Come with me and we’ll make history

It’s our time. It’s our time. It’s our time.

Now I’ve found my own voice, and I speak from the heart

It’s our time. It’s our time. It’s our time.

Social Media Based Contests Help Artists on PR Costs

Posted in Debut CD with tags , , , , , , , , on September 23, 2011 by Jennie Walker

As I enter yet another competition, based on social media interaction, such as VOTES or LIKES, I am realizing how valuable these contest really are for those emerging artists who have tiny marketing budgets for their music. While time is money, I think using competitions based on social media hits are a great way to get some new fans, get some press all at the same time, increasing your user skills in social media, which seems destined to stay.

My win in the British Airways Face of Opportunity Contest with a marketing pitch for my album Night Flight to London, had many levels of competition, most being based on the number of votes I could secure. I found myself heavy on social media, like Twitter and Facebook, getting the word out. Result? I won. Got trip to London/Rome to promote my music. Met amazing people. Album on British Airways inflight audio for six months. And, most importantly, a sense of pride and accomplish and a feel of real support from the airline.

Right now, having experience the value of that contest, I have entered yet another competition. This time the prize is £10K worth or music promotion on the music website we7. I am one of 10 artists, who have been selected by Ditto Music (my digital music distributor) to get some social media promo and if I get more LIKES on the Ditto Music Facebook page than any other artist, I will win that one month promo of my music.

That’s something worth Tweeting about!

If you’d like to participate, just go to the Ditto Music Facebook page on their WALL posts. You will find my featured Artist profile about 4 posts down in the WALL feed, as of this writing. Just under the airplane image on the YouTube video, is a LIKE button. That’s the one you push!

The HELP – Edges of History

Posted in Debut CD with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , on September 20, 2011 by Jennie Walker

The HELP

There is history you can’t remember…you weren’t born yet. There is history that has been glorified or glamorized ..filtered…like panning for gold where all the bad stuff has fallen away. There is history you live through. You were there, a witness to a time that in retrospect, seems otherworldly, like some Alien sighting.

What I saw of history, in The HELP, is a mixture of all of that. The HELP represents the history my mother lived. The history I was not there to witness but which I heard about. Segregation. She lived through that. The HELP represents the edges of change, which I was able to witness, but was too young to understand while it was happening. There are the classic stereotypes of the upper class: the snob, the privileged, the DAR member. And, according to my movie partner, they were 1dimentional. But, as I explained, they needed to be so the maids…The HELP could be three dimensional. The maids were more than 3 dimensional…they created something so special that only an Oscar nod could capture the true essence of what I saw on the screen.

My mother’s mother died three days after she was born. She was put into the arms of her father’s sister and later into the arms of Ida, a black nanny who would raise her and one of many black nanny’s or maids that would be in and out of her life.

My mother often spoke of the affection she had for Ida, as she never knew her own mother. Later in life, my mother, who was a singer and a songwriter, would write a musical called MLK based on her life – the story of her life, a white woman, raised by a black nanny in the time of MLK. She wrote songs to reflect all the milestones during that time, such as a song about Rosa Parks, a song about the march on DC, a love song between Coretta Scott King and MLK and then her very personal song about her love for Ida, called “Momma Don’t Leave Me Now.” About when Ida died. She did see her as her mother. This was not because her own mother was not loving…since her own mother was not alive, it was because of the closeness and the bond the two shared. A natural bond.

My mother was a proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and she worked hard for me to join and follow in her footsteps., which I did. She was educated and went to an all girl’s college, to get her MRS degree before the obligatory trip to Europe with her girlfriends.. She married soon after college and became a full time wife of an Army Colonel, raising 5 kids along the way…..but not without HELP. Marion at 14, would enter my mothers life as HELP.

My mother had to straddle the two worlds and find a place for her own feelings. Throughout her life she was in awkward social situations, which I witnessed myself or heard about after the fact, where like the characters in the movie, she had to make a social choice about where she stood on subjects like The HELP.

She always managed to find a graceful way to deal with the times or the changing times that would allow her to maintain her respect and love for her nanny Ida and Marion, a woman who would be in and out of her life until she passed.

Marion was and is a member of our family. She was there in the beginning…She was there in the end. When my mother had her first stroke, Marion would care for her, in that classic tale of the parent becomes the child, but in this case it was the nanny becomes the elder care provider.

Ida and Marion – Like glorious bookmarks on my mothers life…we can barely measure it and could not write the entire story without the love of and for The Help.
