The Limitless Challenge

I walked away from the Limitless movie screening at the Kips Bay Loews Theater in Manhattan on Wednesday evening having made a decision. I was going to approach at least one thing each day that scared me, as if I had no limits and no fear.

The question that remained with me, after viewing this film, is how to live my life with out fear and self-imposed limits, without having to take a little silver pill. How can I access the confidence winners exude on a daily basis? Director, Neil Burger, did a great job of leaving me with more questions than answers. And, no one could answer those questions except me.

If we truly only access 20% of our brain, what would it take to access more? Some how superior knowledge overrides fear. Is knowledge something we could consciously try to obtain? Maybe we are already smarter than we think, without having to take more college courses? Maybe knowledge is hidden very deep inside, like some “knowing?” Maybe it is just our attitude that needs to change, waking up each day like a winner…..looking like a winner, feeling like a winner and ultimately becoming one? Or like the Maybelline slogan, maybe were just born with it?

You don’t need Charlie Sheen running around saying “Winning” to understand a Hollywood example of what it takes to become a winner. Bradley Cooper did a fantastic job of acting out the full range of consequences of success in Limitless. Everything has a price. And, becoming the best of our selves is something I would be willing to pay for. But, the payment is not with green stuff. It’s with internal stuff. And, I have been so inspired, that I intend to dig deep each day to find the best parts of me and put them forward. I’ve been too self deprecating over a life time of musical pursuits. Maybe in fashion, like New York Times photographer Bill Cunningham, modesty and ethics can move you forward. But in music? I’m not so sure it’s worked for me.

There have been countless books written about winning businesses and those who lead them. But this movie is about a winners personality, and those that bleed him.

So, today, my Limitless Challenge was reaching out to someone, who had been referred to me, who might know about work in London. After my trip to London, as part of the 250 businesses who won the British Airways Face of Opportunity Contest, I had this gut feeling that I needed to return, in order to keep the momentum of the trip behind my music. So, whether it is for just another business trip I return to London to promote my music, or for an actual job that allows me to work there, I am approaching this as if there are no limits. I am approaching this as if it is easy to do.

And, that is where the magic is.
